Honoring Those Who Serve

At this year’s annual meeting of ABHOW March 1-3, members of American Baptist Homes and Caring Ministries will be on hand to enjoy the fellowship. It’s also an opportunity for us to honor those who have contributed significantly to the association’s work. We are excited to recognize two individuals and a congregation for their incredible efforts during 2011.

Our two individual honorees are also members of the ABHOW family – Kay Kallander and the late Paul Jepson — whom we will present with the ABHCM Special Merit Citation for their work creating ABHOW’s innovative memory support program, The Grove.

In his nomination letter, ABHOW President and CEO David Ferguson noted that Jepson, who died in May 2011 after a short illness, and Kallander “exemplify the very essence of our mission in their dedication, creativity, loyalty and caring nature in serving older people not only within the ABHOW organization but throughout the country.”

In addition, we will honor Good Shepherd Baptist Church in Lynnwood, Wash., with our Merit Citation Award for a local American Baptist Church involved in creating ABHCM ministries.

Since the establishment of the congregation in 1961, Good Shepherd has lived its Christian mission through community activism. Its most significant contribution was the 2003 decision to use land adjacent to the church property to help create an affordable senior housing community.

The result is Shepherd’s Garden, a 40-apartment community created in association with ABHOW, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Washington State and Snohomish County. When Shepherd’s Garden opened its doors, all available apartments were immediately filled, and the community maintains a waiting list of nearly 150 people.

These honorees represent the very best of what ABHCM strives to achieve across its broad spectrum of members and ministries, and we look forward to the opportunity to acknowledge their contributions at this year’s awards ceremony.

Peace and blessings,

The Rev. Garth Brokaw
ABHCM Board President

The 2012 ABHOW Annual Meeting will take place March 1-3 in Fresno, Calif. The ABHCM awards will be presented during the scheduled recognition portion of the agenda on the morning of March 2.
